Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
