Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
